New laws are here
Emergency response workers put their lives at risk every day when working in roadside environments.
To keep them safe, new laws require motorists to move over and slow down when passing a stationary emergency response vehicle displaying blue, red, magenta or yellow flashing lights.
The penalty for not moving over and slowing down is $483 and 3 demerit points.
You must move over and slow down for the following types of vehicles
displaying flashing lights at the roadside:
Emergency services
flashing blue and red lights
- Queensland Police
- Queensland Ambulance
- Queensland Fire and Emergency Services which include Fire and Rescue Service, Rural Fire Service and State Emergency Service
Transport enforcement
flashing magenta lights
- Transport and Main Roads compliance vehicles
- National Heavy Vehicle Regulator compliance vehicles
Breakdown assistance providers
flashing yellow lights
- Tow trucks
- Roadside assistance, for example RACQ or other vehicles that provide a similar service and are clearly marked
